Short Movie Reviews

Red and I went on a date night last week and finally saw Avatar, the movie everyone's been raving about.  We both enjoyed it and walked out talking about it 'til bed time.  It was a good movie, but not very original.  Kinda like Pocahontas (white man and native chief daughter fall in love; a tree is a diety) meets Ferngully (white man gets a native body and learns native ways, falling in love with the environment and girl) meets Dinotopia (the scene where they choose their reptile bird) meets Aliens (Sigourney Weaver and James Cameron!).  I guess there's nothing new under the sun.

I liked that it was fairly clean.  Nothing I'd let the kids see right now, but it didn't have any embarrassing sex scenes, blood and gore or excess cussing.  The natives walked around in just about nothing, but it didn't feel explicit since it was in blue alien bodies.  The cussing was brief and expected being there was war and military.  There was, of course, violence, but you didn't see bodies torn up or much blood.

Another movie we saw recently was Leap Year.  I was expecting it to be somewhat like Chasing Liberty, since they had the whole scene of them having to act married in the preview, but it pretty good.  It was mostly a chick flick, but Red even walked out saying it was pretty good.  Typical city girl who's obsessed with name brands meets a country man whom she needs help traveling from.  There was a big "culture" gap between them.

Best line of the movie:  "May you never steal, lie or cheat But if you must steal, steal away my sorrows. If you must lie, lie beside me all the days of my life. And if you must cheat, cheat death."  *sigh!!
