Housing Opportunities

As most of you know, we've been on a search for a new home. We've been weighing the benefits of renting and buying.

Well, a few opportunities have come up. Now, they're all in the not-so-near future and aren't somewhere where we can just move any time soon, but they may possibly be options.

The first I'll mention is staying where we are. I visited the rental office this past week and the woman who manages these apartments offered me the position...of managing these apartments. It would include a 2 bedroom apartment as wages and is supposedly part time work. It's something I could do since I'm a stay at home mom now. It would also be a GREAT opportunity to save money to buy a house - which is a serious option for the future, i.e. within a few years. The position wouldn't be open until at LEAST April, though.

The other opportunities are with a family from church, the Spinks. In an effort for them not to lose their home AND to help us out, they were thinking of having us move in with them. The couple would move into the game room - where I used to live - and Big Red, Karrots, and I would have the master bedroom and the bedroom adjacent to it. It's sort of its own little section as it has a separate door for its hallway so there would be privacy. Their kids would live upstairs and they may work on getting more temporary foreign students.

Also, the father of the husband may present another option for us. They're hoping that grandpa would refinance his house, help them to move into another house, and we'd be able to rent grandpa's home. This would take a LOT of work and committment to happen, though, but it could happen...and it would be closer to Big Red's work.

Please be praying for us. I'm getting antsy and feel like a move is needed, which is obvious by all the boxes I've been packing lately.

Water Shortage Measures

We got a flyer in the mail today from our local water & power. It talks about measures the city wants its residents to abide by. The first states: "Use a broom to hose down walkways, sidewalks and driveways instead of a hose."

Hmm...use a broom to hose...How does that work?

Things I've Been Learning

  • I quote movies and secular songs way more often than I quote scripture...probably because I've watched more than I've read.
  • I haven't begun to grasp the concept of God being my daddy.
  • I still haven't completely gotten over certain past hurts I've been dealing with for years.
  • It's hard for me to read past one chapter of the Bible...I reach the end of one and see it as a milestone and a stopping point. These pauses weren't even in the original text!
  • "Jesus never taught His disciples how to preach, only how to pray." With Christ in the School of Prayer
  • I am completely ignorant when it comes to the power of prayer.
  • I rarely mean and understand what I'm singing in worship songs.
  • People couldn't receive the Holy Spirit until Christ came to make us pure as He couldn't dwell in an unclean person.
  • Question: What's the difference between worship and prayer?
  • "As long as in our worship of God we are chiefly occupied with our own thought ans exercises, we shall not meet Him who is a Spirit..." With Christ in the School of Prayer
  • As a child I used to ask God to forgive my sins every time I prayed. I haven't done that for YEARS! I also used to pray using the acronym ACTS (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) and haven't thought about it in years.
  • "The knowledge of God's Father-love is the first and simplest but also the last and highest lesson in the school of prayer." With Christ in the School of Prayer
  • Christ taught, "First, Thy name, Thy kingdom, Thy will; then give us, forgive us, lead us, deliver us." With Christ in the School of Prayer
  • Challenge: Do I pray for others more than myself?
  • We need to remember "Thy kingdom come"..."The children of the Father are here in the enemy's territory, where the kingdom, which is in heaven, is not yet fully manifested." With Christ in the School of Prayer
  • "In each prayer to the Father I must be able to say that I know of no one whom I do not heartily love." With Christ in the School of Prayer
  • Janet, at church, gave an illustration of God during prayer. As we pray what He's put on our heart, He is eagerly waiting for us to just ask since He's simply excited to give to us. He's shouting, "Come on! Ask me! Just ask me!"

Poetry from Christmas Around the Fireside

Christmas in America
2007

Six weeks before Christmas, in stores did appear
The hustle and bustle of holiday cheer.

Before the Thanksgiving turkey was done
Some houses were lit and some stockings were hung.

Black Friday at last, to the mall we must go
For pictures with Santa in fake cotton snow.

To Walmart, to Target, to Robinson’s May,
To Macy’s, and Sears, and all in one day!

**********PAUSE**********

Four weeks not till Christmas, the race has begun
We shop till we drop, but where is the fun?

The search is now on for that one perfect tree
That costs way too much, but they tie on for free.

Now off to the play at the kid’s public school,
Where being “PC” is the primary rule.

With snowmen and Santa and reindeer galore,
But leave your religion outside the door.

There’s no more Nativity scene in our town;
The ACLU said they all must come down.

When the church didn’t raise so much as a chatter,
I thought to myself, “NOW what is the matter?”

They’ve removed Christ from Christmas, although He’s the reason
Believers rejoice in this holiday season.

**********PAUSE**********

Two weeks to go, there’s a frenzy of baking
And cooking and wrapping and chocolate-fudge-making.

The cards are all signed and sealed, now that’s done!
The Post Office – one more errand to run!

A quick stop at the store finds the checkers and clerks
All tired and cranky and acting like jerks.

**********PAUSE**********

Just one week to go and our tree is still naked;
We’ve no holiday cheer, and yet we all fake it.

We’re over-committed and need to slow down;
From parties and luncheons all over town.

Can’t wait for Christmas to be over and done,
We’re way too exhausted from “holiday fun.”

**********PAUSE**********

The night before Christmas, dad’s shopping at last;
To Walmart he flies to cover his…behind!

We’re frantically looking for gifts that we hid
In drawers and in cupboards and out in the shed.

Last minute wrapping and can’t find the bows
To finish the packages waiting in rows.

Time to go caroling, bundled up tight,
Thought it’s 80 degrees in SO CAL tonight.

As we sing we remember the words of the songs
That give honor to Jesus, just where it belongs.

We head off to bed and dream of the morning
When we’ll look out our window and snow will be pouring…hey, it could happen!

**********PAUSE**********

It’s Christmas at last…we sigh in relief,
We watch Charlie Brown tell Linus “good grief!”

The fire is lit, the feast is prepared
We look at our gifts to see how we faired.

The presents are opened, the mess has been cleaned,
But can that really be all Christmas means?

Is it all about gadgets and games that we play,
Or a babe in a manger that first Christmas day?

About how He was born to take away sin,
And give us all hope for the future again?

We look at the manger and loot at the tree
Our eyes have been opened, we finally see.

All the year round, we need to remember
The gift that God gave us, not just in December.

The cross was His purpose that first Christmas night,
Born into the world to bring Truth and Light.

How soon we forget His sacrifice made;
Our sins are forgiven, our debt has been paid.

In the rush and the frenzy, remember the reason
Of God’s divine purpose in this Christmas season.

May God keep you safe as you fight the good fight,
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night
